Famous Cellist Performing in Washington!

Washington Friends of Music presents the 9th annual Summer Concert Festival with world-class musicians and superb performances of The New Baroque Soloists.

World-renowned cellist Sergey Antonov, Gold Medal winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow will play at the first concert on Friday, Sept. 10 with The New Baroque Soloists. Hailed as ”a brilliant cellist” Antonov has been a recipient of many awards and has garnered top prizes at international competitions.

Sergey Antonov enjoys a versatile career as a soloist and chamber musician. He has been touring extensively throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America performing in concert halls ranging from the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory to Suntory Hall in Tokyo and at the Newport Festival. He is a member of the critically acclaimed Hermitage Piano Trio with whom he has recorded several CDs and which in 2019 received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance.

The second concert on Sept. 17 will be dedicated to the memory of Metropolitan Opera’s esteemed violist Vincent Lionti, who immensely enjoyed performing in Washington with The New Baroque Soloists. Mr. Lionti’s elegant performances, eloquent introductions of pieces and players, and the wonderful and humorous anecdotes he shared with the audience will be dearly missed. He was a class act and will forever be remembered with great admiration and appreciation.

The best Baroque music composers will be performed at the third and final concert on Sept. 24: Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Telemann – plus Leopold and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart!

All concerts will feature horns, oboe, strings, and Basso continuo with solo pieces for cello and organ. Highlights include Adagio for Violoncello by Alessandro MarcelloAll’Elevazione by Domenico Zipoli, Dixit Dominus by Antonio Vivaldi, and Allegro from Concerto for Two Horns, Oboe, Strings, and Basso continuo HWV 331, thematically related to Water Music, by Georg Friedrich Handel.

The members of The New Baroque Soloists, a chamber music orchestra lead by Artistic Director Douglas Myers, are renowned solo as well as orchestral musicians performing in New York, Boston and internationally, and are revered for their exquisite, engaging, and uplifting performances. Much appreciated by the audience are the musicians’ brief introductions on each piece as they enlighten listeners about the composer, the instrument, and the historical context.

The concerts are taking place Fridays at 5:30pm on Sept. 10, 17, and 24 in the Historic Meeting House, First Congregational Church at the Green in Washington, CT, 6 Kirby Road.
